  Tiger Distribution

At the beginning of this century it is estimated that there were 100000 wild tigers with 8 different subspecies in the wild. Today there are only 5 remaining and their number is less than 8000 living across Asia in the wild.

The Bali, Caspian, and Javan tigers have become extinct in the last 70 years.

Bali tiger: extinct in the 1930s

Caspian tiger: extinct in the 1970s

Javan tiger: extinct in the 1980s

Today all subspecies except the Bengal Tiger are below the threshold of 2000 characters, which means that the specie is in danger of extinction.

The past and present ranges of the remaining five tiger subspecies are illustrated in this picture.
