The captive populations of the Siberian tigers are the largest for all of the tiger subspecies. It is estimated there are between 400 and 475 Siberian tigers in the wild, with about 525 in captivity.

In Russia the Siberian tiger is sometimes called the Amur tiger, Manchurian tiger and the Northeast China tiger.
The Siberian tiger has thick yellow fur; it has a white chest and belly; its stripes are brown rather than black, and are widely spaced.
Males can grow up to 3.6 meters long and weigh up to 360 kg. Females are smaller, measuring about 2.6 meters from head to tail, and weighing about 100 to 170 kg.
